Aim

The main aim of this course is to learn to use digital simulation tools to assess daylighting and electric lighting inside and outside buildings. The course will thus introduce the daylighting simulation programs DIVA for Rhino, DIVA for Grasshopper and Dialux. Preliminary plans and sketches of a physical environment will be provided to the students who will have to model the building and predict daylighting levels, electric lighting and some standard daylight metrics indoors and outdoors. Secondary objectives of the course: 1. Compare the output of two simulation programs (Dialux versus DIVA). 2. Propose and verify the effect of three design alterations on daylighting levels and metrics in the building.

Course Contents

Simulation tools and analyses of light indicators are presented. Digital tutorials are presented and seminars dealing with methods to simulate and present simulation data. The course consists of lectures and exercises in which these simulation tools are tested.

Examination Details

Examination formats: Written report, seminars given by participants, miscellaneous. To pass on this course, the participants have to attend all the lectures and tutorials about the computer software and present the results of their own simulations of the building using the software introduced during the lectures. The final presentation will consist of a 10 000 words report stating the goal, method, results and conclusion of the study and discussing their results. Alternatively, the students could instead prepare a conference paper about their study. Suitable conferences will be suggested by the teacher.
