Aim

The purpose with this course is to give participants opportunity to train practical skills within manuscript writing and revision, grants applications and budget work.

Goals

Knowledge and Understanding

For a passing grade the doctoral student must

• show awareness of different formatting requirements for manuscripts
• show awareness of different formatting requirements for grants applications and budgets

Competences and Skills

For a passing grade the doctoral student must

• show capacity to follow rules and conventions for manuscript and grant proposal submissions
• show capacity to create texts with fitting illustrations and data in a scientifically convincing way, in correct English
• show capacity to make their case and persuade editors and reviewers

Judgement and Approach

For a passing grade the doctoral student must

• show respect for deadlines
• show committment to the writing tasks

Course Contents

Free, creative manuscript writing for journal-specific templates, writing of rebuttal letters and revised manuscripts, free, creative grant application writing to a grant source, budget work.

Instruction Details

Types of instruction: Lectures, exercises, miscellaneous. The course consists of one common introductory lecture and five mandatory individual written assignments.

Examination Details

Examination format: Written assignments. For a pass, all assignments must have been submitted on time, and executed according to certain minimal requirements (all mandatory sections filled out without plagiarisms).
Grading scale: Failed, pass

Admission Details

Assumed prior knowledge: It´s preferred that the phD student previously has participated in one or several of the courses in academic writing.
Selection criteria: In case of an excess in number of applications, applicants will be selected in order of registration (first come, first served). Max 10 participants.

Further Information

The course corresponds to five weeks of work. Images, tables, graphs, example texts etc for creation of manuscripts and applications are available at the homepage. Those who want can use data from their own research for the assignments.
