Aim
  • The aim of the course is to give basic understanding of research methodology, ethics, and innovation, with particular focus on systems and software.
Contents
  • Different research methodologies and how they fit in different academic fields. Specific methodologies for computer science and systems. Academic integrity and rectitude. Ethical considerations, both during research and in applying the results. Innovation processes and exploitation of research results.
Knowledge and Understanding
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • show knowledge about basic concepts in research methodology for research in technology, in particular for computer science and systems.
    show understanding of the relation between basic and applied research and the relation between technical research and development.
    master the basic ethical principles that act as guidelines for research in technology.
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • reflect on how different research methodologies and ethical considerations affect their own and other's research in technology fields.
    present their research from an innovation perspective
Judgement and Approach
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • show awareness of ethical aspects of technology and innovation

  • The course is given in the form of three full day seminars with pre- and post-meeting assignments. Before each meeting the PhD student shall read a number of papers and answer questions, and after each meeting a short essay should be written and peer reviewed.
