Aim
  • The overall goal of the course is to enable students to critically reflect on programmer experience research published at venues such as the Programming Experience workshop, the Psychology of Programming Interest Group and the PLATEAU workshop.
Contents
  • Core aspects of HCI theory necessary to follow the material in the course.
    History of the study of programming from the perspective of the programmer.
    Range of methods that have historically been used and how they have influenced the design of programming systems.
    Strengths and limitations of the existing methods for the study of programming.
    State of the art of PX research research.
    How to present PX research.
Knowledge and Understanding
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be able to define core aspects of HCI theory as it applies to programming.
    be able to describe the range of methods that have historically been used and how they have influenced the design of programming systems.
    be able to describe the state of the art of PX research.
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be able to design a study with focus on programmer experience.
    be able to apply methods for study of programmer experience in practice.
    be able to present results from a study of programmer experience.

  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be able to assess the strengths and limitations of the existing methods for the study of programming.
    be able to select an appropriate method for a given design task or experimental task.
    be able to identify open questions and approaches and relate these to approaches discussed in the course.
