Aim
  • The purpose of the course is to provide a deep understanding of the subject digital communications. Wireless communications is an area that has seen a rapid growth during the recent past. This is reflected well in the department’s research which is dominated by various aspects of wireless communications and span across many different sub-areas. A few examples are circuit design, pure theoretical research, antenna design and network solutions.

    Nevertheless, the scientific basis of wireless communications is digital communications. A solid basis and skills in this subject is of major importance for a large fraction of the department’s doctoral students.
Contents
  • Standard probability distributions, signal space descriptions, receiver structures, carrier transmission, channel capacity, bandlimited systems, intersymbol interference, multi-user systems, multi-carrier systems, fading channels, multiple-antenna systems, advanced coding systems, synchronization.
Knowledge and Understanding
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be capable of describing advanced digital communication systems.
    in detail understand theoretical limitations of digital communication systems
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be able to identify and analyze standard digital communication systems
    be able to orally present communication theoretic problems and their solutions
    be able to orally present the content of scientifc articles
    have acquired sufficient knowledge within the field to be able discuss digital communication problems with established researchers in the field
Judgement and Approach
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • have the ability to independently extract the important content of an extensive document, such as a textbook.

  • At the exercise classes, the Ph.D. student should present and discuss solutions to the home assignments at the white board

  • 80% attendance is required at the excercise classes. The Ph.D. students receives a list of problems to be solved each week, and all of those must be handed in correctly to obtain a passing grade. The course is concluded with an additional set of problems that must be solved.
