General
Aim
  • This course considers the latest technology development in wireless communications, LTE and LTE Advanced, some times referred to as "4G". These systems are high performing and represent "state-of-the-art" in many aspects. A central part of this course is to give detailed knowledge of the communication methods that are used in down-link and in up-link,respectively, that make these high performance increases possible. This course also includes trends for future system solutions. The aim of this course is to give good knowledge concerning principles, concepts, functioning, performance and limitations for such systems for mobile communications.
Contents
  • Fundamental limits for the bit rate - capacity results and interpretations. Spectrum flexibility. OFDM - multi user communications. Systems with multiple antennas. Adaptive mechanisms in connection with variations in channal quality in the downlink and in the uplink. Transmission methods in the downlink and in the uplink. The physical layer. Control signals base station - mobile. Receiver structures. Performance for LTE and LTE Advanced. Trends for future systems.
Knowledge and Understanding
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be able to show a significantly deeper knowledge concerning modern systems for mobile communications
be able to critically analyse and describe modern systems for mobile communications from an overall perspective
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be able to identify, formulate, and handle complex problems within the area of multi-user communication based on spread spectrum techniques
be able to suggest technical solutions based on the LTE concept that satiesfies given performance requirements
be able to independently work in a creative way with advanced projects, and also orally and in writing clearly present, motivate and discuss obtained conclusions
