General
  • English
  • If sufficient demand
Aim
  • The course aims at understanding how software defined networking can be used to both simulate complex networks and to build such networks for systems with high requirements on adaptiveness and management.
Contents
  • The course consists of two main parts. The first part is aimed at understanding the motivation, the underlying technology, the advantages and limitations, and the different tools used to build complex networks using SDN. The second part is a project, where the students identify a problem, formulate it in the context of a use case and implement a software defined network in order to solve the identified problem.
Knowledge and Understanding
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • Describe the advantages and limitations of using SDN
Describe the northbound and southbound interfaces and how they are used to define and build an SDN network
Describe the different network protocols and architectures used in SDN
Describe the purpose, advantages and disadvantages of current component implementations in SDN architectures
Describe the trade-offs between various SDN architectures
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • Be able to use the most important tools for controlling and monitoring network traffic
Be able to design and implement an SDN-network for a specific scenario and use case
Be able to apply the design choices in order to implement use cases
Be able to apply state of the art protocols for management of SDN components
Be able to adapt, extend and implement SDN applications
Judgement and Approach
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • Be able to discuss specific use cases for SDN and design choices for building the network
Be able to discuss and present an implemented SDN application and argue for the design choices made
Be able to discuss the main reasons for using SDN for certain use cases
Be able to analyze and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of applying SDN for certain use cases compared to non-SDN approaches
Be able to discuss the interaction of the implemented SDN deployment with other connected systems
Types of Instruction
  • Seminars
  • Project
  • Self-study literature review
  • The first half is mainly a literature study and seminars. The second half is a project part consisting of weekly meetings with the course responsible.
Examination Formats
  • Written report
  • Seminars given by participants
  • Failed, pass
Admission Requirements
Assumed Prior Knowledge
  • Basic knowledge in computer networks, network protocols and Python programming
Selection Criteria
Literature
  • Forskningsartiklar.
  • Some articles will be handed out, and some will be identified by the students.
