Aim
  • The course aims at providing knowledge of the basic principles for designing the hardware side of optical communication systems. This is achieved by providing knowledge about optical fibres and wave guides, and how these components are integrated into optical communication systems
Contents
  • Lectures:
    · Guided wave optics
    · Fibre optics
    · Fibre-optical communication systems
    Lab works: Three laboratory exercises: Fibre Optics, Integrated optics, Fiber optic networks.
    Demonstrations: Lab visit and examples of current research projects.
Knowledge and Understanding
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • understand how light propagation in wave guides and optical fibres can be modelled

    understand the principles and calculate the performance of optical fiber components.

    understand the physics behind and operational principles of fiber optic networks
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be able to design and theoretically evaluate the performance of simple optical communication systems.

    have an increased competence in presenting in writing an accomplished project.

    be able to search and acquire knowledge from references within the field.

    have an increased experience of working in groups of two or four persons towards a common goal.
