This course aims at providing the participants with a basic knowledge of fracture mechanics and skill in simple fracture mechanical design.
Kunskap och förståelse
För godkänd kurs skall doktoranden Understand the background and be able to develop new theory regarding linear fracture mechanics. Have knowledge of nonlinear fracture mechanical methods. Understand the difference between continuum mechanics and fracture mechanics. Have knowledge of the related methods used in industrial activities.
Färdighet och förmåga
För godkänd kurs skall doktoranden Be able to use fracture mechanics methods for linear fracture mechanics and be able to develop and apply linear methods for different types of relevant conditions. Be able to apply nonlinear fracture mechanics methods to realistic engineering problems.
Värderingsförmåga och förhållningssätt
För godkänd kurs skall doktoranden Be able to determine when a risk of fracture in structures may exist. Understan concepts such as "leak before break" and other methods that are used to prevent rapid crack propagation.
The course covers three parts: I) Foundation of fracture mechanics that includes linear fracture mechanics, stress intensity factors, fracture toughness, computational methods, nonlinear fracture mechanics, J-integrals, CTOD, HRR field, J-controlled crack growth. II) Failure mechanisms behind brittle fracture and cleavage fracture, transition from ductile to brittle behavior, micro-mechanical models, polymers, ceramics and composites. III) Applications. Test methods (KIC, J and CTOD test), dynamic test, crack arrest, testing of welds, Charpytest, testing of non-metals, fracture mechanical design, methods for calculation of K and J, the R6-method, finite element methods, calculation of limit load.

Förutsatta förkunskaper: Basic solid mechanics in one and two dimensions. Elementary knowledge of the continuum mechanics, simple multidimensional calculus, differential equations, series expansions.
