Aim
  • The aim of the course is to provide knowledge of advanced finite element methods.


    The course deals with advanced topics and analysis of the finite element method. The aim of the course if to present advanced theories and also implement them in a finite element environment.

  • Mixed formulation, Plates and shells, Assumed strain and enhanced strain elements, Accuracy and error control, Solution procedure, Finite element with constraints
Knowledge and Understanding
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • Understand the concept of mixed finite element
    Understand the idea of common solution procedures for linear systems
    Understand the concept of plates and shells
    Understand how the error can be estimated and controlled
    Understand the concept of h/p adaptivity
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • Be able to implement simple structural elements
    Be able to use advanced structural elements
    Be able estimate the error of a finite element solution
Judgement and Approach
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • have the ability to derrive a mixed finite element forumlation
    have the ability understand the implication of element choice on the finite element solution
