The aim of the course is to provide knowledge on an up-to-date treatment of different formulations, algorithms and discretization techniques in contact mechanics.

1. Continuum mechanics background which includes the derivation of the contact constraints
2. Strong form, weak form
3. discretization of the contact problem
4. Solution techniques for systems of nonlinear equations with inequality constraints
5. One-dimensional contact problems
6. Two- and three-dimensional contact problems

Understand the concept continuum mechanics with contact constraints
Understand the idea of strong form and weak form of continuum mechanics problems
Understand the Galerkin Finite Element method to discretize the weak form
Understand different methods of numerical treatment of inequality constraints

Be able to derive the weak form from the strong form
Be able to discretize the weak form
Be able to implement different numerical methods for treating inequality constraints
Be able to use different contact algorithms
Be able to derive contact mechanics from a general continuum mechanics framework
Be able to derive the contact constraints

Be able to choose suitable contact formulations depending on the contact problem
