General
Aim
  • The course is intended to give a deeper insight in the physics of the atomic nucleus in a quantum mechanical point of view. Treated subjects are models of the nucleus, decay processes and nuclear reactions. The course has many connections to ongoing research in basic and applied nuclear physics at Lund University.
Contents
  • Nuclear forces, nuclear models, radioactive decay, alpha, beta and gamma emission, nuclear reactions, fission and fusion, nuclear reactors, astrophysical aspects of nuclear physics, nuclear spectroscopy.
Knowledge and Understanding
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • have profound knowledge about the physics of the atomic nucleus
    be able to explain how the nucleus can be described by different quantum mechanical models
    have an understanding of the quantum mechanical description of the decay process.
    have an understanding of the quantum mechanical description of nuclear reactions.
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be able to apply quantum mechanical methods for analysis and calculation in nuclear physics.
    have developed the ability to analyze, combine and relate different topics of the course content for a more fundamental understanding of the atomic nucleus, representing a many body quantum system.
    have improved the ability to present experimentally achieved results in written and oral form
