General
Aim
  • The aim of the course is to give the doctoral student a good understanding for, and the solutions to the probelms that arise when continuous-time ststems och processes are regualted by discrete-time computers. The course provides the necessary insight, knowledge, and understanding required to effectively analyze and design computer-controlled systems
Contents
  • Analysis of Discrete-Time Systems, Sampling, Z-transforms, State-feedback and observers, pole-placement, I/O-models, Delta operator formalism, implementation and noise models, Optimal linear quadratic control in state-space and I/O form
Knowledge and Understanding
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • know how state-feedback controllers and observers can be designed for discrete time systems using pole placement, understand their properties.
know, and understand the main properties of linear quadratic control design methods.
    understand discrete-time noise models.
know how to obtain models suitable for design of computer-controlled systems, for instance by sampling analog system models, noise models and cost functions.
know how to handle practical implementation issues such as limited bit-width and sampling rates.
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be able to design models and controllers suitable for computer implementation.
be able to do calculations based on the Z-transform.
be able to design controllers based on pole placement and linear quadratic methodology for discrete time systems
Judgement and Approach
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be able to critically judge the performance of different models and design methods for discrete time systems
