Aim
  • The aim of the course is to give a detailed expose of the history of automatic control, both in academia and in industry. The course gives an understanding of how ideas develop, how fads come and go, and how research communities emerge. It gives historical and societal perspectives on the PhD program in automatic control and is also useful for teaching.
Contents
  • The course contains ten lectures: Introduction. Governers and stability theory. Process control. The feedback amplifier. Harry Nyquist. Control emerges. The second wave. Automatic control in Sweden. Automatic control in Lund. The future.
Knowledge and Understanding
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • account for the main phases in the history of automatic control
    have knowledge about the main driving forces and applications in the development of automatic control
    obtain knowledge about the specific history of his/her own research topic
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • conduct and orally present a historical study of his/her own within a subtopic of automatic control.
Judgement and Approach
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • have perspectives on how ideas and trends develop within a research area

  • Seminars
  • The course is arranged as a study circle with ten scheduled meetings consisting of a lecture (video or "live") and a discussion session led by a PhD student. At a final seminar the PhD student presents his/her own historical study.

  • A passing grade requires attendence (80%) and active participation in the seminars and a final oral presentation.
