Aim

The aim of the course is to give PhD students working with technologies associated with heart transplantation a deeper understanding of the clinical practice in which their research outcomes will eventually be deployed.

Goals

Knowledge and Understanding

For a passing grade the doctoral student must

• be able to account for the state of the art when it comes to organ preservation throughout the transplantation process.
• have good knowledge of what legislature and practice guidelines govern how heart transplantations are conducted in Sweden.
• have some knowledge of what legislature and practice guidelines govern how heart transplantations are conducted in at leat a few other countries.
• understand the interplay between technologies for organ donor care, organ preservation, re-conditioning, and evaluation, and requirements stipulated by legislature, guidelines, and medical consideration.

Competences and Skills

For a passing grade the doctoral student must

• demonstrate the ability to map out the state of the art within the scope specified under "Knowledge and Understanding".
• demonstrate in writing and oral presentation the understanding of how contemporary clinical practiced is shaped by the interplay of medical, legal, and technological constraints.

Judgement and Approach

For a passing grade the doctoral student must be able to reason, in writing and oral presentation, about how novel technologies are likely to shift the medical practice, and associated legislation.

Course Contents

The course covers contemporary practice of heart transplantation from a Swedish perspective, with outlooks both internationally and to how novel emerging technologies are likely to change this practice. Through involving medical practitioner as advisors, the students obtain knowledge through a combination of guided literature search and self study, and dialogue with said experts. The format of the course is that of a study circle project, in which the students pair up and explore research literature and regulatory texts, to cover the knowledge and understanding requirements. The tangible outcomes are a written report, in the form of a mini review article, and a presentation for the group and advisors.

Course Literature

An important part of the course is to conduct an advisor-guided literature search.

Types of instruction: Project, self-study literature review, study visit. Student group meetings with the expert advisor(s) count as "Study visit" in this context.

Admission Details

Admission requirements: The participants are expected to be actively conducting research within technology aimed at improving the state of the art of heart transplantation.
Assumed prior knowledge: None outside that stipulated by the admission requirements.
Selection criteria: In the event that demand exceeds advisor capacity, students nearest dissertation, as per credits in the latest supervisor-signed version of their individual study plan, will have priority.
