Aim
  • The course aims to welcome all newly admitted PhD students to LTH, and to contribute to a smooth start of the participants PhD programme.
Contents
  • The course includes brief sessions on the LTH organisation, objectives of PhD training, general and individual study plans, student - supervisor mutual expectation questionnaire/interviews, PhD courses at LTH, the supervision process, scientific information management – first aid, procedures – rights – support - obligations in PhD training at LTH, presentation of student representatives, international mobility, academic conduct in research, introduction to outreach activities.
Knowledge and Understanding
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be aware of the local context of PhD training, and the national intended learning outcomes of PhD education in Sweden
    be aware of the uses and meanings of the individual and general PhD study plans
    know where to turn in case of problems related to their PhD training
    be aware of the structures of international student mobility.
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be aware of how to communicate mutual expectations on their PhD training together with their supervisors
    be aware of how to suggest useful contents to be added to their individual study plan
    be aware of how to navigate in the LTH’s range of PhD courses, and know which courses to take early on.
Judgement and Approach
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be aware of how to show a critical approach to academic conduct and norms in research
    be aware of how to explain their science in outreach activities.

  • Exercises
  • The course consists of three threequarter-day workshop sessions one week apart. Study tasks have to be prepared prior to session 2 and 3.
Examination Formats
  • Written assignments
  • For a Pass on the course, the participant must have attended all of the scheduled activities and completed and passed all assignments in the course.
  • Failed, pass
Admission Requirements
  • To be admitted to the course applicants have to be newly (within one year) admitted to a PhD programme at LTH.
Assumed Prior Knowledge
Selection Criteria
  • All eligible applicants are accepted to the next available course.

  • Reading will be available on a separate course website.
Further Information
  • Lunch is catered during the meetings (working lunch sessions).
