The aim of the course is to offer participants an opportunity to improve their communicative strategies and academic writing skills to meet disciplinary demands. An explicit aim is to increase the participants’ awareness of the prevailing publication conventions in their specific field of study, with a primary focus on research articles.

General academic writing, discipline-specific academic writing, discourse analysis, process-oriented writing, rhetorical structures, English written proficiency, communicative strategies, peer response, publication conventions.

be aware of existing rhetorical patterns in research writing, both in general and in their specific disciplines
be aware of common ways of structuring information in research writing on sentence, paragraph and text level.

be able to reflect on the research writing process in terms of planning, drafting, editing and revising
be able to analyse, discuss and develop writing in their own disciplines with the support of frameworks, models and collegial discussions
be able to identify potential weaknesses related to their written English language proficiency
be able to provide constructive feedback on the writing of others, through written and oral peer response.

demonstrate willingness to engage in collegial discussions on academic writing
demonstrate openness towards alternative traditions of academic writing.

The course comprises a series of lectures, workshops and tutorials combined with group exercises and individual assignments.

Inlämningsuppgifter

For a Pass on the course, the participant must have attended at least 80 % of the scheduled activities and completed all assignments in the course.

Underkänd, godkänd

To be admitted to the course applicants have to be part of a PhD programme at LTH.

Priority is given to: 1) PhD students who have previously applied to the course and were eligible at the time, 2) PhD students with the earliest admittance dates to the PhD studies.

 

Reading material will be distributed by the course instructor.

It is expected that applicants are sufficiently far along in their research process that they can start drafting sections of a research paper.
