Syfte

The aim of this course is to equip PhD students, at an early stage of their education, with the tools and commercial “spectacles” needed to be able to look at their research from a utilization perspective. This will further stimulate the transfer of research results to society, and contribute to enhanced innovation and cooperation between academy and industry.

Kursinnehåll

The course is held during five days within 2 months of time with focus areas: a) “Innovation in the research environment” (what is innovation?, utilization, the NABC(need – approach – benefits – competition) concept) b) “Put on your innovation spectacles” (Market analysis, customer benefits) c) “Protecting your ideas” (intellectual property, patent strategies, licensing, patent search) d) “Optimizing conditions for funding” (financing research ideas, pitching technique) e) “Tools for innovation ” (prototyping, catalysis of innovation)

Kurslitteratur

There is no specific course literature, but the book below is recommended for those who wish to know more about the NABC-concept that was developed at Stanford research institute.Carlson, Curtis R. & Wilmot, William W.: Innovation: The five disciplines for creating what customers want.. Crown Business, New York, 2006.

Kursens undervisningsformer

Undervisningsformer: Föreläsningar, seminarier, projekt. The course is built on lectures around the different focus areas and three project assignments, out of which two are individual and one is done in group.

Kursens examination

Examinationsformer: Skriftlig rapport, inlämningsuppgifter, seminarieföredrag av deltagarna. Project 1: NABC-analysis around the students research project presented in a one-page report and orally. Project 2: Groups project around idea with business potential, more thorough NABC-analysis in a 10-page report and oral presentation in value creation forum. Project 3: Individual search around the doctoral student´s research project in patent databases (day 3) which shall be written up in a short report.
