Syfte

The aim of the course is to help doctoral students and researchers at LTH to formulate a useful research data strategy and thereby also meet legal requirements and funder mandates for performance in data planning, documentation, preservation and sharing in an increasingly complex digital research environment.

Kunskap och förståelse

För godkänd kurs skall doktoranden

• Demonstrate an ability to handle their research data and formulate a useful research data strategy.
• Be able to analyse research data management practices in general and reflect on how it is specifically used in their own research domain.
• Demonstrate knowledge of relevant policies and how they affect publishing of research data.
• Be able to explain the basic principles of a Data Management Plan and for research data life cycles.
• Demonstrate an increased awareness about data management, data curation and provenance relevant for data publication and data re-use.

Färdighet och förmåga

För godkänd kurs skall doktoranden

• Be able to prepare a data management plan.
• Be able to prepare a basic relevant description and documentation of research data.
• Be able to upload data and data documentation to a repository.
• Demonstrate the ability to motivate the relevance of data curation and provenance.
• Demonstrate ability to plan for issues related to long-term preservation, discovery, and re-use.
• Be able to formulate a data dissemination strategy.
• Be able to relate to international standards for metadata and data documentation.

Värderingsförmåga och förhållningssätt

För godkänd kurs skall doktoranden

• Be able to evaluate what is needed for research data to live up to the FAIR principles.
• Be able to readjust their strategy for research data if circumstances within the scientific domain change, if the student changes research subject or if student collaborate with scientists in other subjects.
• Be able to evaluate juridical and ethical aspects of research data handling.

Kursinnehåll

The course is an introduction to the management of research data and today’s developments around data management planning, data collection, data curation and data publication. Also, aspects of data documentation (metadata) standards, data citation and juridical aspects of research data are included. The course will follow the data principles “FAIR Data Principles” (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable). Exercises and assignments will focus on best practices for the research data life cycle and day-to-day research data management. Preparation of an individual data management plan and planning for making data available for publication including making data FAIR.

Kursens examination

Examinationsformer: Inlämningsuppgifter, seminarieföredrag av deltagarna, övrigt. A minimum of 80% attendance.

Antagningsuppgifter

Förkunskapskrav: To be admitted to the course, participants need to be admitted as doctoral students.
Förutsatta förkunskaper: None.
Urvalskriterier: Priority is given to doctoral students admitted to third-cycle studies at LTH, with higher priority of more senior research students. Researchers at LTH who are required to produce a data management plan by for instance a funding agency are also prioritized. Others are welcome in case the course is not full.
