The aim of this course is to give an insight into the physical phenomena that govern the separation process in membrane plants.

Elements that are discussed are: transport phenomena in porous media, concentration polarization, fouling and cleaning of membranes, process design, system configuration, membranes, modules and economy.

be able to analyze and theoretically explain how different parameters influence the retention of membranes
be able to analyze and theoretically explain the background of concentration polarization (CP), and how CP influences membrane performance
be able to analyze and theoretically explain causes behind fouling

in writing and orally be able to account for influence of different operating parameters on retention and flux
in writing and orally be able to identify causes for fouling

on one's own be able to design a membrane process
