Aim
  • The aim of the course is to give an introduction to theory of science, research methods and methodologies relevant to research and development in the engineering sciences, as well as encourage reflection and discussion of current research, research methods and scientific quality.
Contents
  • The course content includes an overview of relevant research methodologies, research methods, data collection and analysis, as well as scientific quality in the engineering sciences presented through literature and seminars. The seminars also give an opportunity for discussion and reflection on the included content and its relevance for the student’s particular research project. The course content also includes written assignments on the topics discussed during the seminars.
    3-5 seminars
    3 written assignments with reflections on the current topic in relation to the student’s own research to be discussed in each seminar, maximum 1 page.
Knowledge and Understanding
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key assumptions, positions and concepts in scientific research and development work.
    demonstrate in-depth knowledge of relevant research methodology and different methods of scientific research and development work within their own research area.

  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • demonstrate ability to critically review the choice of research methodology and methods for scientific studies and development work.
Judgement and Approach
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • demonstrate ability to critically reflect on relevant scientific, societal, and ethical aspects of research and development in the engineering sciences.
    demonstrate insight into the possibilities and constraints of science, its role in society, and the responsibility of different actors for its use in the engineering sciences.
