The aim is to provide deep and theoretical knowledge about the physiology, function and exploitation potential of living microbial cells.

The course will provide the PhD student a profound knowledge on the relationships between microorganisms, their function in nature, their application in industry and their potential for solving environmental problems. The course covers the metabolism and genetics of the cell, microbial diversity, and the use of microbes for industrial production and bioremediation.

• demonstrate significant knowledge and understanding of microbial physiology and genetics and have molecular knowledge of proteins, metabolism and ecology
• show significant knowledge and understanding of microbiological genetics
• demonstrate significant knowledge and understanding of how microbes can be used for white biotechnology and for solving environment-related problems

carry out and orally present a literature project, in which different biochemistry and microbiology parts of the course are integrated, analysed, synthesized, and discussed

present orally a critical and interdisciplinary report based on scientific papers

Litteraturkurs som självstudier

There are 4 oral examination sessions with all the participants and two teachers present. For each session PhD students prepare, by independent study from a designated part of the study book. During each session the PhD students will answer questions prepared by the teachers. For the oral presentation each PhD student prepares a seminar based on a literature study of a topic related to microbiology. In total the course takes place over 1.5 semesters.

There are 4 sessions of oral examination in the presence of two teachers. At the end of the course each PhD student prepares and presents a seminar with a topic within microbiology. Each candidate will be assessed according to the learning goals.
