The course aims, through visits to manufacturing companies in at least two countries, to compare and evaluate different production conditions regarding e.g. culture, leadership, technology, automation level, cost breakdowns , etc.

For a passing grade the doctoral student must
The student should choose one or more factors that are particularly interesting and describe and discuss them with respect to the performance of production systems. The study should be based on the factors and performance parameters of the production performance matrix. While studying the level of automation the relationship between wage costs, machine hour rate of all cycle should be taken into account. Furthermore, the effect of downtime , quality deficiencies and material waste are included in the study. Especially costs and other considerations related to environmental and recycling aspects should be assessed.
The students themselves choose the literature needed to complete the task.

Assumed prior knowledge: General knowledge of production corresponding to a master of science in Mechanical Engineering and the ProViking course PV 44 or equivalent.
