The European Spallation Source (ESS) will enable transformative advances in materials science. In order for ESS to meet its scientific goals, extensive contributions from a variety of engineering disciplines are required. The aim of this course is to introduce the Phd-student to the specialized applications of mechanical, electrical and software engineering required to make ESS a success. An overview of the basic project management activities required for a large scale project such as ESS will also be presented. Lectures will presented by the engineers and scientists carrying out the work, who are world leaders in their area of expertise.

The scope of the course can mainly be divided into three big fields that are carried out on ESS which is accelerator-, instrument- and target department. Key topics and different components will be highlighted in each department such as: particle acceleration techniques used in ESS, spallation targets, different neutron instruments which are used for the experiments. Different fields within cryogenic engineering (fluid & material properties, cryostat design, refrigeration techniques, thermal insulation systems). Superconducting radiofrequency systems for example: niobium cavities, power couplers, tuning systems and cryomodules. Radiofrequency engineering (RF system basics, klystrons, IOTs, high voltage power supplies). Vacuum systems and different components for example: pumps, gauges, vacuum system design. Beam instrumentation design. Different accelerator magnet design for the ESS, Control systems (ESS architecture, PLCs, EPICS software). Topics outside the three major topics will also be included for example project management basics (scope, cost & schedule, WPS development, risk and contingency), applications and analysis, different research fields and also environmental aspects.

be able to describe fundamental concepts and basic definitions of project management
understand the scope of engineering problems associated with large scale accelerator based scientific research facilities.

apply fundamentals of cryogenic engineering, vacuum engineering, RF engineering to solve problems similar to those required for ESS
use knowledge gained to independently seek out and learn more about engineering solutions at ESS
