Aim

The aim of the course is to give the participants an understanding of the concepts, theories and methods used in Transport research, as well as a picture of the state-of-the-art knowledge in the subject.

Goals

Knowledge and Understanding

For a passing grade the doctoral student must

• show knowledge of the basic concepts, theories and methods used in transport research,
• understand the width and deep of the research field in transport and its multidisciplinary character,

Competences and Skills

For a passing grade the doctoral student must

• be able to demostrate a qualified communication with scientists and professionals from the transport area,
• be able to form an independent, qualified and modulated opinion of and - refer to research and practice from the whole area,
• be able to apply theories, methods and research findings from different parts of the area.

Judgement and Approach

For a passing grade the doctoral student must Appreciate the value of systematic approach to the various research areas in transport and their analysis methods.

Course Contents

Overview over concepts, theories, methods and research issues in the actual areas: - Accessibility - Traffic safety - Transport economics - Transport planning and land use - Road construction and design

Instruction Details

Types of instruction: Lectures, seminars, self-study literature review. The activities of each area consist of an introductory meeting of about 2 hours with some lecture. The participants receive instructions and literature (about 200 pages) for the actual area and make a written home exam and after sending it to the tutor present it on a half-day seminar. At the seminar, the home exams and the actual literature will be discussed in the class.
