Aim
  • Prepare doctoral students for designing, conducting and assessing design science research
Contents
  • The course includes components such as introduction to research philosophy, comparison of different research paradigms, theory building and validation in the design sciences, an overview of empirical research methods common in design science research such as case studies, action research, and experiments.
Knowledge and Understanding
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • - know the concepts of the design science paradigm and be able to recognize and assess theoretical contributions in design science research
    - understand how the choice of research strategies impacts the validity of technological rules of various kinds and at different abstraction levels
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • - be able to identify typical technological rules in published research related to their own work
    - be able to assess the strength and validity of the empirical support for these technological rules
    - be able to articulate their own work in terms of the design science frame
    - be able to select appropriate research strategies for advancing the work
Judgement and Approach
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • - be able to give and take feedback in a constructive manner that is likely to lead to development
    - be able to interact in discussions about research philosophy, research paradigms and research methodology
