General
  • English
  • Every spring semester
Aim
  • The goal of this course is to give the student a deep understanding of both theoretical and practical issues in the design of A/D and D/A converters, which are fundamental and ubiquitous functions at the interface between analog and digital circuits. In particular, we will focus on converters designed around Delta-Sigma modulators.
Contents
  • Basic A/D- and D/A converters; basic Delta-Sigma A/D- and D/A converters; first-order and second-order Delta-Sigma modulators; higher-order Delta-Sigma modulators; continuous-time modulators; decimation filters; design of Delta-Sigma converters on silicon; test and measurements of A/D- and D/A converters; state-of-the-art in the design and performance of CMOS Delta-Sigma converters.
Knowledge and Understanding
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • •be able to describe the fundamental theory behind Delta-Sigma AD/DA converters
•be able to describe the most important definitions and specifications in the design of Delta-Sigma AD/DA converters
•be able to describe the various implementations of Delta-Sigma modulators, with main advantages and disadvantages
•be able to describe the critical components and sub-blocks in Delta-Sigma modulators and their implementation in CMOS processes, as well as the limiting factor for modulators performance
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • •be able to apply the knowledge acquired in the course to design a Delta-Sigma A/D or D/A converter suitable for a practical application
•together with a fellow student, be able to simulate and layout the Delta-Sigma converter
Judgement and Approach
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be able to orally communicate the results obtained from the laboratory work
be able to contribute sufficient fundamental concepts and knowledge so that a competent person in this area can document the idea, the problem and the solutions
