Aim
  • The course aims to deepen and broaden the students knowledge of modern organic synthesis strategies and methods. The course will cover methods with respect to synthesis planning, retrosynthetic analysis, and the synthon approach with respect to functional group strategies and stereochemical strategies, as well as target structure and topology.
Contents
  • Seminars on selected topics in advanced contemporary organic synthesis planning and retro-synthetic analysis. Each student will present an in-depth seminar on a topic within the course. Topics will be selected by the student with advise from course teachers. Part of the presentation assignment is feedback from peers and teachers.

  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be able to describe different strategies for planning multi-step syntheses.
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be able to apply selected synthesis planning strategies to reach comprehensive retro-synthetic analyses.
    be able to propose a viable synthetic plan based on modern chemical reactions and on a retro-synthetic analysis.
Judgement and Approach
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be able to compare and evaluate merits of different retro-synthetic analyses towards a given target molecule.
    be able to compare and evaluate scope and limitations of alternative reagents chosen for transformations within a proposed organic synthesis sequence.
