Aim
  • The purpose of this course is to provide a scientific basis for cell culture work, both with regard to practical work and safety aspects. The goal is to provide insight and knowledge about general techniques in cell culturing as well as those techniques of particular relevance for the individual project. This includes e.g. furnishing and equipment of a cell culture laboratory, appropriate usage of devices, disinfection and sterilisation, laboratory safety and waste management, microbial contaminations, cross-contamination, media, cell adhesion, subcultivation, growth curves, freezing and thawing of cell culture and cloning/selection as general techniques. More specific ones may comprise for example establishing primary cell cultures, immortalisation, production of monoclonal antibodies, transfection, flow cytometry, and certain toxicity tests.
Contents
  • In the course, safety aspects, the practical work in a cell culture lab as well as a theoretical background will be discussed.

  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be able to present basic principles in cell culturing, furthermore rules around safety and waste management.
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • show insight and overview with regard to different aspects of cell culture work and the student should be able to explain and discuss cell culture routines and rules in a scientific way.
    be able to reflect and argument with regard to techniques and routines used in a cell culture lab.
    able to choose appropriate ways to handle material in a cell lab.
Judgement and Approach
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • be able to reflect about cell culture work from a safety and environmental risk perspective.
