The purpose of this course is to provide a scientific basis for cell culture work, both with regard to practical work and safety aspects. The goal is to provide insight and knowledge about general techniques in cell culturing as well as those techniques of particular relevance for the individual project. This includes e.g. furnishing and equipment of a cell culture laboratory, appropriate usage of devices, disinfection and sterilisation, laboratory safety and waste management, microbial contaminations, cross-contamination, media, cell adhesion, subcultivation, growth curves, freezing and thawing of cell culture and cloning/selection as general techniques. More specific ones may comprise for example establishing primary cell cultures, immortalisation, production of monoclonal antibodies, transfection, flow cytometry, and certain toxicity tests.
