Aim
  • To give the students a good theoretical foundation in contemporary interaction design theory and the ability to apply theory as well as evaluate others' application of the theory within the field of interaction design.
Contents
  • Central areas of the course include: usability, user experience, human factors, design thinking and philosophical and theoretical perspectives on interaction design, for instance: activity theory, distributed cognition, post cognitive trends and AI, ethnomethodology and situated cognition, and phenomenology and post phenomenology.
Knowledge and Understanding
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • describe and discuss major theoretical perspectives within the field interaction design
    compare and relate major theoretical perspectives within the field of interaction design to each another
    describe and discuss at least one theoretical perspective on an advanced level
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • thoughtfully choose and apply theoretical perspectives in the field of interaction design to a given task, which can be purely theoretical or related to a research project
    show the ability to summarize the essence of one theoretical perspective and communicate it to others
Judgement and Approach
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • show the ability to assess others' application of theory in the field of interaction design
    thoughtfully suggest a theoretical foundation given a specific interaction design problem within the frame of the PhD student's own thesis project
Types of Instruction
  • Seminars
  • Project
  • Self-study literature review
  • The course consists of a series of seminars on the subject of interaction design where different theoretical perspectives will be discussed. The seminars are held and organized by the PhD students whom take turns organizing the seminars. Those or the PhD students that organize a seminar prepares and holds a presentation and shares their preparation material with the rest of the course afterwards.

    The PhD students that does not organize a specific seminar, write a reflective text on the theory that the seminar covers. The course also consists of an individual essay in which the theoretical perspectives brought up in the course are put into a larger context and is related to the own thesis project

  • Forms for examination: Written preparations for seminar, PhD student led seminar, reflective texts related to the PhD student led seminars, and the individual essay.

    The PhD students that does not lead a specific seminar hands in a reflective text related to the given seminar. For a passing degree, all parts of the course must be approved.

Admission Requirements
Assumed Prior Knowledge
  • The PhD student is expected to have basic knowledge about interaction design corresponding to an introduction level course.
Selection Criteria
Literature
  • Rogers, Y.: HCI Theory: Classical, Modern, and Contemporary. Morgan & Claypool, 2012.
  • Approximately 1000 pages of scientific literature selected by the participants together with the course coordinator will be added.
Further Information
  • The course is given if there is interest from eligible students, though at most once a year. If there are less then 5 students registered, the course could be cancelled.

    Additional requirements:
    - Only persons admitted to PhD studies are eligible to take the course.
    - The participants should be able to motivate that the interaction design topic is relevant for their thesis project.
