General
Aim
  • The course aims, through visits to manufacturing companies in at least two countries, to compare and evaluate different production conditions regarding e.g. culture, leadership, technology, automation level, cost breakdowns , etc.
Contents
  • The student should choose one or more factors that are particularly interesting and describe and discuss them with respect to the performance of production systems. The study should be based on the factors and performance parameters of the production performance matrix. While studying the level of automation the relationship between wage costs, machine hour rate of all cycle should be taken into account. Furthermore, the effect of downtime , quality deficiencies and material waste are included in the study. Especially costs and other considerations related to environmental and recycling aspects should be assessed.
Knowledge and Understanding

Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • Identify the differences between the various production systems that can be related to the surrounding community (living standard, culture, history).
Identify the differences between the various production systems that lead to a given competitiveness.
Describe the specific differences between the various production systems for quality yield, time yield and rate, and exemplify the reasons for the differences.
Assess series size´s impact on the cost structure where e.g. setup times and run times is considered.
General assessment of the production system requirements for staff expertise and opportunities for skills development.
Roughly estimate detail cost allocation in manufacturing systems in terms of the traditional cost items in industrial manufacture.
Describe the differences in the level of automation between the studied systems.
Describe the difference between production systems regarding sustainability parameters.
