Aim
  • The aim of the course is to give the Ph D students an introduction and overview of the main theories and methods in policy studies, an insight into specific policy studies in areas such as climate, environment, energy and transport, and practical knowledge of how to conduct policy studies within their field of research.
Contents
  • The course consists of reading, lectures, literature seminars, written reflections on literature and the carrying out of a policy study in the student’s own field of research. A main part of the course consists of reading literature within policy studies. The literature is discussed at seminars and the students should hand in written reflections on the literature. At the end of the course the students carry out a policy study in the student’s own field of research.

  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • Be able to explain and compare main theories and methods within policy studies
    Be able to demonstrate knowledge of policy studies in different specific policy areas
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • Show ability to critically assess theories and methods of policy studies as well as specific policy studies in different specific policy areas
    Show ability to carry out a policy study in his/her field of research and present the study in a written report an orally
Judgement and Approach
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • Show ability to discuss and reflect on the choice of theories and methods within policy studies

  • The course consists mainly of reading and seminars and demands an active participation from the participants
Examination Formats

  • Active participation in seminars. Mandatory participation (minimum 80% attendance).
    Written reflections on literature. 2-4 smaller written reflections (1-2 pages) and discussion in seminar.
    Policy study in the student’s own field of research. 4-6 pages written report, oral presentation, opposition of another report.

Admission Requirements
  • Enrolled in one of the following PhD subjects: Technology and Society (TETOSF00), Transport and Road Technology (TEVTTF02), Environmental and Energy Systems Studies (TEFMIF00) or Real Estate Science (TEVFTF00).
