Aim

The basis of many biological processes is written down in the genetic code that is translated into biomolecules that cooperate to create, and various biochemical processes and ultimately life forms. As part of this course molecular genetic processes and biomolecular structure and interactions are studied and discussedin order to enabling detailed studies of life processes and related biotechnological and molecular genetic applications.

Goals

Knowledge and Understanding

For a passing grade the doctoral student must

• • be able to describe and discuss in depth the components of proteins and genes, as well as systems composed of those
• • be able to describe and discuss in depth processes in which genes and / or proteins interact

Competences and Skills

For a passing grade the doctoral student must • be able to reflect in depth upon genetic and protein-based processes and be able to explain experimental observations of such processes

Judgement and Approach

For a passing grade the doctoral student must * to demonstrate a willingness to adequately present, question and debate scientific knowledge and theories in the field of molecular biology

• Watson: Molecular biology of the gene (senaste utgåvan).
• Lesk, A.: Introduction to Protein Science: Architecture, Function, and Genomics (senaste utgåvan).

Additional literature is selected jointly by the students and the examiner in connection with problem based learning group sessions

Instruction Details

Type of instruction: Exercises. Problem-based learning related to 10 problems defined by the examiner

Examination Details

Examination format: Miscellaneous. Active participation in problem based learning groups at a level relevant for the learning objectives. If required (due to absence from study group meetings): written reports. If the level is in doubt: oral exam.

Admission requirements: Admitted as doctoral student or expected to be admitted as doctoral student
Assumed prior knowledge: Basic knowledge of molecular biology (first cycle)
Selection criteria: 1. Students in reserach subjects that in its general curiculum indicates the course as mandatory or one of a few mandatory alternatives.

Further Information

Will normally be given every second fall year (if at least 6 students will take the course; may also be given with fewer students). Not more than 10 students will be admitted any given semester. Will be given in Swedish unless students that have the course as mandatory or as a mandatory alternative in their general curriculum and that cannot communicate effectively in Swedish attend the course.
