The aim is to provide deep and theoretical knowledge about the structure, physiology, function and possibilities to exploit living microbial cells. With this deeper knowledge of relationships between microorganisms, and their structure and function in nature, the course also provides the PhD student to integrate this knowledge with microbial applications in industry and for solving environmental problems. The course covers the genetics and metabolism of the cell, microbial ecology, and the use of microbes for industrial production and bioremediation.

For a passing grade the doctoral student must carry out and orally present a literature project, in which different biochemistry and microbiology parts of the course are integrated, analyzed, synthesized, and discussed

For a passing grade the doctoral student must present orally a critical and interdisciplinary report based on scientific papers
Microbiology is an exceptionally broad discipline encompassing specialities as diverse as biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, taxonomy, pathogenic bacteriology, food and industrial microbiology and ecology. The aim of “Advanced Microbiology” is to cover all aspects of microbiology during a series of seminars. The participants are limited to a maximum of four graduate students. Two teachers contribute in the seminars. The course ends with an oral presentation in public.

Type of instruction: Self-study literature review. There are 5-6 oral examination sessions with all the participants and two teachers present. For each session PhD students prepare, by independent study from a designated part of the study book. During each session the PhD students will answer questions prepared by the teachers. For the oral presentation each PhD student prepares a seminar based on a literature study of a topic related to microbiology. In total the course takes place over 2 semesters.
Examination formats: Oral exam, seminars given by participants.
There are 5-6 sessions of oral examination over 2 semesters. At the end of the course each PhD student prepares and presents a seminar with a topic within microbiology. Each candidate will be assessed according to the learning outcomes.
Grading scale: Failed, pass
