Aim

The aim of the course is to provide the participants with an overview of airborne transmission of infectious agents in various environments and to give the participants knowledge on methods to detect and prevent airborne spreading of such agents.

Course Contents

Emission, transport and deposition of airborne microbes. Survival mechanisms of microbes in the air. Techniques to sample and analyse airborne biological material (including laboratory demonstrations). A historical perspective on major airborne diseases. Inhalation and defence in the respiratory tract. Airborne contamination in pharma, clean rooms and industry. Air quality in operating rooms and hospital hygiene.

Admission Details

Admission requirements: The course is open for PhD students. Others, such as PhDs or people working in areas related to the course content, may participate, subject to availability.
Assumed prior knowledge: The course requires no specific prior knowledge, but the participants need to be able to understand and evaluate scientific literature.
Selection criteria: Maximum 20-25 participants. Priority is given to PhD students in related areas and those that are members of the research school NDPIA.
