Aim
  • The aim of the course is to make the participants think in a more structured way about their experimental work, for example concerning planning and evaluation of results.
Contents
  • The course follows the content of the course book. In short this is:
    - What is science?
    - What is an experiment?
    - Basic statistics
    - Statistical experiment planning
    - Planning, experimenting, analysing
Knowledge and Understanding
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • - Understand the basic steps in the development of science and what experimental science is
    - Understand the difference between inductive and hypothesis driven research.
    - Understand the value of statistics in experimental studies.
Competences and Skills
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must
  • - Be able to use basic statistical tools to plan and analyze experiments.
    - Be able to use different (non-statistical) tools to plan, conduct and analyze experiments.
Judgement and Approach
  • For a passing grade the doctoral student must

  • Self-study literature review
Examination Formats
  • Seminars given by participants
  • Before every course occasion the participants should have read one or more chapters in the literature and answered the questions therein. The answers to the questions are presented and discussed at the seminars.

  • All PhD-students with experimental work are welcome.
